What is a Chimney Cricket?

A cricket chimney is a triangular-shaped ridge/peak that’s installed on the higher side of a chimney’s back. Its primary purpose is to divert water and debris away from the joint between the chimney and the roof. This sloped structure effectively prevents water from pooling and accumulating behind the chimney, which can lead to leaks, rot, and deterioration over time.

The Importance of a Cricket Chimney:

Water Diversion: One of the most significant threats to your roof’s integrity is water infiltration. When rainwater or melted snow gets trapped behind a chimney, it can seep into the roofing material, leading to water damage, leaks, and mold growth. A cricket chimney acts as a barrier that channels water away from the vulnerable juncture between the chimney and the roof, reducing the risk of moisture-related problems.

Preventing Ice Dams: In colder climates, ice dams can form on roofs, especially around chimneys. These dams occur when snow melts and then refreezes at the roof’s edge. A cricket chimney helps prevent the accumulation of snow and ice behind the chimney, which can contribute to the formation of ice dams. By keeping this area clear, the chances of ice dam-related damage are minimized.

Structural Integrity: Water infiltration can compromise the structural integrity of your roof and the chimney itself. Over time, moisture can cause wood to rot, weaken the roofing structure, and damage the chimney masonry. By diverting water away, a cricket chimney plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall stability and durability of your roof.

Enhanced Lifespan: Investing in preventative measures like a cricket chimney can significantly extend the lifespan of your roof and chimney. By minimizing exposure to moisture and related issues, you can avoid costly repairs and replacements down the line.

We were called out to a home in Millburn New Jersey for a new roof assessment; where the customer explained they had been experiencing leaks by the fireplace and were considering replacing the roof. Upon inspection of the roof, we discovered the cause of the leak was from no existing cricket roof. Our crew replaced the roof with Owens Corning duration shingles in color Estate Gray and Built out a Cricket Chimnet, then reflashed it.
