How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

As the temperatures drop and the leaves begin to change you may want to start thinking about preparations for winter, before it’s too late. While planning for winter weather and the holiday season, do not forget to take a look at your roof. If you’re already stressed with winter preparations, don’t worry, prepping your roof is a breeze when you have a trusted roofing contractor. Here are a few steps you can take to make sure your roof is ready for winter.

Look for Damage

If you’ve been busy all summer, you probably didn’t have time to inspect your roof closely. After the long, busy summer days come to a close, it’s time to take a look at your roof. Are there any shingles missing? Does the ridge line sag? Look for any damage that you might have missed. You don’t want to wait until the snow covers the damage.

Check the Shingles

It’s particularly important to look at the areas where shingles meet antenna mounts, flashing, bricks, or plumbing stacks. Often, these areas have an additional water shedding sealant that can crack over time. Make sure your contractor looks closely at these areas to determine whether these areas need to be re-sealed.

Inspect the Gutters

Gutters often accumulate debris. You can ask your contractor to take a look at your gutters to ensure that there is no build up. If there is, you want to clean it out as soon as possible. Once clean, you can flush your gutters with a garden hose.

Look in the Attic

While you’re thinking about your roof’s health, check the attic. Make sure that your roof is well-insulated and that the insulation is evenly distributed. Insulation is key in keeping your home warm this winter.

When it comes to winter preparation, you need to make sure that your roof is in the best shape possible. The best way to prepare for winter is to make sure any roof damage is repaired immediately.
